The Underworld-The ancient Greek realm of the dead, ruled over by Hades and his wife, Persephone.

Appearance[]

Although not featured much in the show, the Underworld has several different realms where the souls of the departed are sent to receive punishments befitting the crimes and sins they committed when they were alive.

General[]

The three-headed dog Cerberus guards the gates of the Underworld, allowing entrance to those ferried across the river by Charon and preventing any souls who try to escape. However, there have been a few noted characters who have been able to outsmart the guard dog and escape the Underworld, either by using food or music which are confirmed to be two ways to subdue the guard dog.

Campe is the jailer of Tartarus, tasked with preventing anyone from escaping as they are deemed too dangerous to be released.

King Minos judges the entering souls, most often sending souls to Tartarus for all eternity.

Charon ferries the souls of the departed across the river when given a payment of gold coins, possibly between 1-2 coins per soul.

The deepest area is Tartarus, where Cronos was imprisoned after his defeat at the hands of Zeus. One must be dead in order to enter, although the heroes circumvent this rule by sneaking through the picture of the The Four seasons in Persephone's solarium. There are also other secret passages, but Chiron is adamant that they remain secret.

In Forget Me Not, the deity Hypnos has a cave dwelling where poppy flowers grow and are the only cure to the memory loss caused by the river Lithe.

Locations[]

  • Tartarus: The deepest area is Tartarus, where Cronos was imprisoned after his defeat at the hands of Zeus. This prison is known for those who have committed the greatest offenses, mainly against the Gods. The prison appeared to neutralize the powers of its prisoners as Cronus had to wait for the planet alignment on New Years to have enough power to escape.
  • Elyisun Fields: Heroes reside in Elysium, the one place in the underworld that isn't dark and gloomy, but idyllic and peaceful instead. As its name states, it appears similar to a beautiful field location with scattered Grecian styled buildings.
  • Plains of Asphodel: In Greek mythology, asphodel is a plant sacred to Persephone and grows in the Underworld. There is an entire field of aconite growing in the field, but anyone who steps off the path to enter will turn to stone. Odie solved the problem by putting the path's dirt into his shoe so technically he is still on the path.

Mythology[]

After Peirithous and Theseus' wives died, they pledged to carry off daughters of Zeus; Theseus chose Helen of Sparta and together they kidnapped her when she was 13 years old and were going to wait until she was older to marry. Pirithous chose a more dangerous prize, Persephone herself. They travelled to The Underworld and stopped to rest on the Chair of Forgetfulness disguised as stones and found themselves unable to stand up from the rock as they saw The Furies appear before them.

Hercules freed Theseus from the chair, but the Earth shook when he attempted to free Pirithous. He had committed too great a crime for wanting the wife of a god and Hercules was forced to leave him behind.

Trivia[]

  • In Road to Hades, Persephone claims that the Aconite flower is the only plant that grows in the Underworld. It is later shown in Forget Me Not that poppy flowers grow outside of Hypnos' cave.
  • Several sources state that the Underworld has various valleys and prisons where certain punishments are dealt based on certain sins. One example being stated that the second prison is where Cerberus eats souls of those who committed sins of greed and the eighth prison is where souls were frozen up to their neck for committing sins against the Gods.
