Summary[]
Odie lets Hermes' powerful Caduceus fall into Cronus' hands and, thinking he doesn't have the stuff heroes are made of, he quits the team and joins Cronus.
Plot[]
On a high mountain top palace, Cronus is instructing his minions to reel in a captured griffon in hopes of using them as a way to attack mankind. The griffon manages to get away and Cronus decides he will need the one known item powerful enough to control the griffons.
In a forest, the teens are trying to fend off an aggravated bear while Odie feverishly searches his computer for useful information but mistakenly finds information on teddy bears. Just as it seems they will have to harm the bear, Hermes uses his Caduceus staff to control the bear and make it leave. With the bear gone and Hermes taking charge, the group continue on their way with Odie lagging behind after packing his computer.
That night, Hermes is showing the teens the constellations and the myths they are tied to. When Herry asks about a particular star, Odie gets his computer and is lightly teased by Atlanta about always having it with him. Odie defends himself by claiming he needs to be as connected as possible but receives more teasing from Neil relating to the teddy bear mishap until Jay ends their mocking.
Hermes announces his departure to let the group enjoy their camping trip and leaves his staff in Odie's care, although the item proves to be heavier than it appears as Odie struggles to lift it. After some quick instructions of how the staff works and what it can do, Hermes leaves at a rapid pace.
Just as the group is starting to relax, Theresa senses danger and alerts the others of giants approaching. Most of the teens prove easily capable of handling the giants while Odie struggles to get the staff working. After dodging an attempted strike, Odie is thrown against a tree and the giants claim their prize. With the giants gone, Theresa checks on Odie and realizes he needs help from Chiron for a head injury. Although Odie warns the others the giants have the staff, Jay ultimately decides Odie's well-being comes first. As Archie and Neil put together a stretcher, Odie finds a broken piece of the staff and hides it in his pocket.
In Cronus' lair, the giants present the staff to Cronus who right away notices one of the broken wings which renders the item useless. He warns his henchmen to find the missing piece to get the Herald staff working again.
At the hidden school, the six teens are waiting to hear of Odie's condition and are relieved to see he is alright. Odie assures a guilty Jay that he is alright and does not blame the leader for what happened. After the chosen seven return to the brownstone, Odie is doing research on the Trojan War and learns how his ancestor Odysseus created the famous trojan horse to trick the citizens of Troy to open the gates. Odie feels like he is nothing like Odysseus as he is not a fighter, they do not look alike, and he got information on bears mixed with teddy bears.
In the gym, the others are trying to figure out if they should right away let Hermes know what happened to the staff. Archie suggests they tell Hermes right away but Atlanta states they should get the staff back first and then tell Hermes. Neil suggests a vote to decide what they should do but half do not answer and Herry votes for both sides.
The conversation is put on halt when Odie arrives. He reveals to the others the broken piece of the staff and becomes angry when Jay suggests the rest of them need to protect Odie. Suspecting they all think he is the "weak link" of the team because his skills differ from theirs, Odie declares that the problem of the staff is his to fix and leaves. Heading to Hermes' office, Odie right away tells his mentor what happened.
After a short while, Hermes leaves his office and Jay right away tries to take responsibility for what happened. Hermes informs them that his staff is powerless now that it is broken but reveals a greater concern, Odie has removed himself from the team. He attempts to leave but Jay tries to stop him. Odie leaves the school, and Jay is unable to follow when Archie announces that Hera wants to see them. Surprisingly, Hera forbids Jay to find Odie to get him to change his mind about returning as it was his choice to make.
Jay cannot accept this and steps down from his leadership position which causes Hera to name Neil the next team leader. Jay does not argue the decision and leaves. Hera instructs the rest to stay close to the school and dorm. After they leave, Hera mentions to Hermes how the events are unfolding before them and are concerned about Odie in all of this.
In his room, Odie begins to cause chaos when he taps into the electrical grid system and causes accidents throughout the city. The chaos is enough to get Cronus' attention, and he then appears on Odie's monitor. Revealing he is no longer part of the Chosen Ones, Odie tries to turn off the monitors, but Cronus uses his powers to stay present and offer an invitation to him.
Odie begins to leave the house but runs into Jay outside. Jay naturally tries to talk to his friend, but Odie does not stop to listen. As he is about to step into the street, Jay suddenly pulls him back and prevents Odie from being struck by a bus. Odie once more becomes upset at Jay protecting him like a child and enters a limo that had pulled up.
Back at the school, Archie is still in disbelief that Hera put Neil in charge of the team, mildly offending Herry when he says the bulkier teen would make a better leader and angering the girls when he doesn't even bring them up as options.
Meanwhile, Odie removes a blindfold and puts his glasses on to find that he is now in Cronus' lair and faced with the titan himself. Cronus attempts to be courteous but Odie wants to get to the point of the meet or else he'll leave. Cronus tries to offer Odie any power he wants to get him to stay but Odie continues to try to leave until Agnon forces him to stay. Out of sheer instinct, Odie suddenly flips Agnon onto his back and realizes he has super strength. Unfortunately, Cronus removes the new power but offers to return it for a price. Wanting the power back, Odie agrees to get the missing piece of the Herald staff and gets his strength back just as Agnon tries to get revenge for his defeat only to be flipped once more.
In a park, Jay sits dejectedly on a bench when Theresa locates him and informs him of the state of the team. Jay refuses to return as he continues to blame himself for everything as of late. Theresa tries to get him to realize that he cannot possibly be prepared for the unknown when they suddenly hear a young boy cry for help after falling into the pond. Jay immediately rushes forward and saves the young boy, proving to Theresa that he is meant to be a hero. Unfortunately, Jay remains unconvinced he is meant to be a leader and is pushed back in the water. After climbing out, he spots Agnon in the nearby trees and is shocked to see the giant obeying Odie.
At the school, the team continues to fall apart when Neil announces he has new outfits for everyone. Although they're mixed on the idea of new outfits, Atlanta suggests their first course of action be that they find Odie and knock sense into him. Archie points out that this need to fight first is the reason she is not qualified to lead. They begin arguing again when Jay shouts for order. He right away informs them that he suspects Cronus is using Odie to get the missing piece of the Herald staff. With his position as leader seemingly re-established, they begin to plan out what to do.
Exiting the portal, Odie successfully returns to the school and heads to Hermes' office to search for the broken staff piece. However, Jay beat him to it. Odie tries to play off his return, but no one believes him. Herry is ordered forward only for Odie to easily brush him off. Neil right away returns the leadership position to Jay as Atlanta throws her bolas at Odie.
Odie catches and returns the bolas, trapping Atlanta. Archie tries to attack next, but Odie catches his whip and crashes him into Herry. Theresa and Neil try to restrain Odie but they too are knocked aside, leaving Jay the last one standing. Jay tosses the broken wing piece to Neil who then tosses it to Theresa.
Odie takes Jay captive and orders Theresa to hand the piece over for Jay's sake. Seeing Odie is quite possibly serious, Theresa gives him the broken piece. Odie grabs it and tries to run off but hears the others prepare to follow him. Heading back to the park, Odie calls out for Cronus. The titan appears and joins the broken piece to the staff, returning its power.
Seeing the six teens had followed Odie, Cronus give Odie one final test of loyalty by giving him the staff and the order to destroy them. Odie takes the staff and calls for a small flock of griffins. He gives a command to attack and at the last moment orders the griffins to attack Cronus, chasing the titan away in the process and removing his super strength.
Hermes takes the staff back while praising Odie for his plan working exactly as he described. Odie explains to his friends that his siding with Cronus was part of a plan he created based off the legend of the trojan horse but the six kept complicating things by trying to save him, something he admits he's grateful for and happily rejoins the team.
Notes[]
- Archie used his Hephaestus Whip against Odie. In the second episode, we learned that whip can cut through any material. If it weren't for the fact that Cronus had made him temporarily powerful, he would have had a limb severed from his body. But Archie didn't know about these temporary powers so it seems that Archie wanted to severely injure him.
- When the heroes are fighting the giants, in the background you can see that Neil does a backflip off a tree, showing he has some level of acrobatics.
- The Chosen Ones who fend off giants and other monsters on a regular basis couldn't handle a grizzly bear.
- However, it is shown that they did not want to cause serious harm to the bear as it was most likely just following its instincts.
Trivia[]
- When Hermes was controlling the bear using his staff, he joked by telling it to find a picnic basket or park ranger. This is most likely a play on the popular cartoon "Yogi Bear". Yogi (the main character in the series) frequently bothered the park ranger by stealing picnic baskets from guests.
- In this episode, Odysseus looks completely different from his later appearance. In this episode, he is a Caucasian man with a slimmer physic.
Quotes[]
Harry: (about the costume Neil has bought for him) Uhhh....it's kinda small!
Neil: (annoyed) It's a lycra, polyester blend, it'll stretch!
Theresa: Jay, it's not your fault.
Jay: Tell that to Odie.
(Odie walks in)
Harry: Odie! It's not Jay's fault.
Mythology[]
Artemis may have been represented as a supporter of Troy because her brother Apollo was the patron god of the city and she herself was widely worshipped. She came to blows with Hera, when the divine allies of the Greeks and Trojans engaged each other in conflict. Hera struck Artemis on the ears with her own quiver, causing the arrows to fall out. As Artemis fled crying to Zeus, Leto gathered up the bow and arrows.
Artemis played quite a large part in this war. Like her mother and brother, who was widely worshipped at Troy, Artemis took the side of the Trojans. At the Greek's journey to Troy, Artemis punished Agamemnon after he killed a sacred stag in a sacred grove and boasted that he was a better hunter than the goddess. When the Greek fleet was preparing at Aulis to depart for Troy to begin the Trojan War, Artemis becalmed the winds. The seer Calchas advised Agamemnon that the only way to appease Artemis was to sacrifice his daughter Iphigenia. Artemis snatched Iphigenia from the altar and substituted a deer. After, Artemis either made Iphigenia her attendant or turned her into Hecate, goddess of night and witchcraft.
