The Horae, more commonly referred to as the Seasons, inhabit a mural that leads to the Underworld from Persephone's solarium. They regulate the seasons and appear as four maidens. each one representing a different season.
Physical Appearance[]
Each season has an appearance of a woman styled after a particular season.
Spring wears a green dress and her hair is styled like grass with flowers blooming. Summer wears an orange dress and her hair is burning fire. Autumn wears a brown dress and her hair is that of nearly barren tree branches. Winter is dressed in blue with light blue skin to signify the cold temperature and hair made of icicles.
Personality[]
As they are not often shown, their personalities are not greatly detailed. Spring is the most well known and is revealed to be a kind and helpful person. Although she and the rest of the seasons are somewhat timid around Persephone when she's angered, they know her quite well. They also help the Chosen Ones when needed although they themselves know to stay out of fights since it would risk the delicate balance of nature.
Role in the Series[]
As they mainly appear to on the stone wall in Persephone's room, their main role appears to be opening the pathway to the Underworld. While they appear like a painting most of the time, they have demonstrated several times that they can become conscious on their own and be able to help those around them if needed.
Powers and Abilities[]
They also possess the ability to control time (specifically visiting past seasons), though their power is slight compared to those of Cronus and have the risk of being permanently drained. A spring flower from the Horae was able to give Jay immunity from an altered timeline. Time travel also weakens their powers tremendously — sending Jay back six months gave the spring Horae a major migraine and she claimed sending all the heroes so far into the past to the Titan War would drain their powers forever.[1]
Relationships[]
- Persephone: Servants to the goddess of spring, they serve her however they can. Aside from opening the portal from the land of the living to the land of the dead, they can tell when Persephone may be in danger.
- The Chosen Ones: As they are the ones prophesized to defeat Cronus, they help the teens however they can. They willingly volunteer any kind of useful information relating to current or past events and even used their powers to send them back to the Titan War to fix what Cronus had changed. Spring seems to fancy Jay.
Trivia[]
- The Summer Horae is the only one that doesn't speak.
- Due to there being four Horae represented rather than three, it is likely that they are meant to be the iteration described by Nonnus, as his account in the only one to do so: with Eiar representing spring, Theros representing summer, Pthinoporon representing autumn, and Kheimon representing winter.
