The god of death.

Appearance[]

When in disguised form, Thanatos looks like a harmless elderly man. He wears a long-sleeved white shirt under a green sweater vest, khaki pants, and black shoes. In this form he has a balding head with grey hair and stands about 1-2 inches shorter than Neil.

In his true form, Thanatos is a tall skeletal figure with large wings. He keeps the hairstyle from his human form and has a beak-like mouth.

Personality[]

Thanatos takes his position as the deity of death very seriously. When Sisyphus was discovered to have escaped the Underworld, Thanatos right away devoted himself to searching for the escaped king to return him to the realm of the dead.

When he and The Chosen Ones formed an alliance, he became willing to help them during certain situations.

About[]

Thanatos, the God of Death, serves whoever wears Hades's Helmet of Darkness, thus he obeys the ruler of the The Underworld. He appears as a mild-mannered and soft-spoken middle-aged man, but his true form is a skeletal winged creature who is able to appear from shadows and dissipate into the air. When Cronus seizes control The Underworld, he summons Thanatos to kill The Chosen Ones. The God of Death successfully kidnaps Archie, forcing the heroes to enter the Underworld to rescue their friend as well as Hades and Persephone.

He is later confronted by the heroes when Sisyphus escapes from the Underworld and agrees to be chained temporarily until Theresa is rescued so that she cannot die until Sisyphus is recaptured.

Plot[]

Thanatos has a relatively minor role in the series. During his debut, he is forced to serve Cronus when the titan temporarily takes control of the Underworld with the Helmet of Darkness. During this time, he had kidnapped Archie which forced the other heroes to travel to the Underworld to both rescue their friend and stop Cronus. They succeeded in both tasks when Atlanta wore the helmet and ordered Thanatos to go after Cronus.

In Like a Rolling Stone, Thanatos discovered Sisyphus was missing from the Underworld and right away began trying to find him. Upon learning from the heroes that Sisyphus was working with Cronus, Thanatos agreed to help the teens by being chained up and putting a hold on the death cycle. However, he was not able to hold himself back for too long and eventually made his way to the mortal realm. Now free, he advised the teens to be careful since they are no longer immortal and right away begins to search for Sisyphus.

Mythology[]

Thanatos is the son of Nyx (Night) and Erebos (Darkness), and twin brother of Hypnos (Sleep). He is also related to Charon, among others.

At one point, he was tricked by Sisyphus. The gods ordered Thanatos to kill the king of Korinth, but Sisyphus tricked the god and bound him with the chains Thanatos had brought, thus preventing everyone on Earth from dying. This brought the attention of Ares, as no one on his battlefields was dying. The god of war broke into Sisyphus's home and freed Thanatos. Sisyphus tricked his way out of the Underworld, but Thanatos refused to recapture him, allowing Sisyphus to live out his life until dying of old age, where he was brought before Hades and Persephone and consigned to roll a boulder uphill for eternity.
