The Elysian Fields, also called Elysium, is the final resting place of the souls of the heroic and the virtuous.

Physical Appearance[]

The fields have an appearance similar to that of a blissful meadow with streams and Grecian structures scattered about.

Role in the Series[]

The Elysian Fields are the resting place of the heroic and virtuous and are currently where most of the Chosen Ones ancestors are.

During the episode Man's Worst Enemy, Theresa is the first of the main heroes to visit the fields when she seeks out Orpheus to borrow his lyre to tame Cerberus in the mortal realm.

In Forget Me Not, it is revealed that the fields hold a hidden danger to anyone who has lost their memories from the River Lethe. Once the amnesiac person enters the fields, their memories will be lost forever, and the only cure is if the person receives a poppy flower from Hypnos' cave before they reach the fields.

Mythology[]

The Elysian Fields is a conception of the afterlife. Initially separate from the realm of The Underworld, admission was reserved for mortals related to the Gods and other heroes. Later, it expanded to include those chosen by the gods, the righteous, and the heroic, where they would remain after death, to live a blessed and happy life, and indulging in whatever employment they had enjoyed in life.

The Elysian Fields were, according to Homer, located on the western edge of the Earth by the stream of Okeanos. The ruler of Elysium varies from author to author: Pindar and Hesiod name Cronus as the ruler, while the poet Homer in the Odyssey describes fair-haired Rhadamanthus dwelling there.

Trivia[]

  • The Elysian Fields are often described as the Greek version of Heavan in the Catholic religion.
