Recipe for Disaster 51
Description
Formal Name: Ambrosia
Affiliations:

Olympus
The Gods

First appearance: Recipe for Disaster

Ambrosia is the food or drink of The Gods. Often depicted as conferring youth and health upon whomever consumed it. It was brought to the gods in Olympus by doves and served by either Hebe or Ganymede at the heavenly feast.

Mythology[]

  • Thetis anointed Achilles with ambrosia and passes the child through the fire to make him immortal but Peleus, appalled, stops her, leaving only his heel un-immortalized.
  • Apollo washes the black blood from the corpse of Sarpedon and anoints it with ambrosia, readying it for its dreamlike return to Sarpedon's native Lycia.
  • Calypso once said; "spread a table with ambrosia and set it by Hermes and mixed the rosy-red nectar."
  • Circe mentioned to Odysseus that a flock of doves are the bringers of ambrosia to Olympus.
  • Tantalus offered his guests the ambrosia of the Deathless Ones, a theft akin to that of Prometheus.
  • Aphrodite used "ambrosial bridal oil that she had ready perfumed."
  • Psyche was given ambrosia upon her completion of the quests set by Venus and her acceptance on Olympus. After she partakes, she and Cupid are wed as gods.

Trivia[]

  • It is well known that ambrosia was not allowed to be consumed by anyone but the gods. Any mortal that risked it faced the possibility of divine punishment.
  • The show presents ambrosia as a food substance, specifically like a pie or pastry.
  • According to Athena and Odie, ingredients in ambrosia include:
    • Honey (organic can work if naturally made is not available)
    • Walnuts (chopped)
    • Flour (possibly)
    • Eggs (possibly)
    • Butter (possibly)
  • Although Athena says there are no vegetables in ambrosia, she has Atlanta gather several vegetables. It's possible she may have been confused about the vegetables as she had nearly forgotten the ingredients and wasn't able to read the recipe properly and possibly had Atlanta get the vegetables out of confusion.
  • It is shown in the episode that if the gods do not have ambrosia, their physical and mental states change to that of elderly citizens. They become forgetful, gain aches and sores, potential dementia, slower reaction time, weakened strength, and more.
